Too many responsibilities and engagements are usually the cause of irregular eating patterns and skipping meals which is detrimental to general well being.ie, “welcome to the life of a pilot.”

to eat or not to eat while flyingSkipping meals has a negative effect on metabolism which in order to burn fat requires a certain amount of fuel every day. However, if you want to keep the blood sugar levels stable, you should avoid skipping meals since not only is our blood sugar affected by what we consume, but when our body is deprived of food at regular intervals, it causes problems with blood sugar levels.

Skipping meals can wreak havoc on your blood sugar levels and could result in hypoglycemia- dangerously low blood sugar-which can cause you to lose concentration, get headaches or feel dizzy and/or sleepy. Maintaining even-keeled blood sugar levels ensure that your brain and muscles receive a steady supply of glucose. Eating regular meals results in better mental acuity, concentration and improved work performance.

Given the above information and since mental acuity and concentration is a must for safety in most circumstances, perhaps, we should address the situation of irregular meals, which could possibly result in abnormal blood sugar levels. Keeping power bars or healthy snacks at hand when you know that a regular meal is not available or convenient could help avoid low blood sugar or hypoglycemia.
