SSC Marks One-Year Anniversary of Hangar Fire and Outlines Plans for New Facility Amidst Continued Community Engagement
Greenville, SC – November 13, 2024 – On this day, Special Services Corporation (SSC) commemorates the one-year anniversary of the devastating hangar fire that occurred at Greenville Downtown Airport. The November 13, 2023, fire resulted in the complete loss of one of SSC’s hangars, four aircraft, essential equipment, and tools. Despite the significant impact, SSC is moving forward with plans for a state-of-the-art facility while remaining deeply committed to serving its community.
The fire, which began in the early morning hours, drew a swift response from the Greenville Fire Department, arriving on-site within minutes. Unfortunately, by the time of their arrival, the hangar was already fully engulfed, and the roof had collapsed. Thanks to the effective firewall design, vital office contents, including essential aircraft logbooks, were preserved, and, most importantly, there were no injuries.
Doug Goldstrom, President of Sales and Marketing, reflected on the past year: “The fire was a profound challenge for our team, but it highlighted the resilience, strength, and unity of SSC’s employees and the surrounding community. We are immensely grateful for the overwhelming support that spurred us to move forward with renewed determination.”
Resilience in the Face of Challenges: SSC’s Hurricane Helene Efforts
This past year has also shown SSC’s dedication to community support, as demonstrated by its role during Hurricane Helene. When the hurricane struck the Carolinas, SSC stepped in, providing crucial support and resources. Aircraft managed by SSC were used to transport essential supplies to remote areas affected by the storm. SSC also volunteered fuel and labor, working alongside local organizations and aviation volunteers, including Happy Helicopter Tours, to deliver relief before federal assistance could arrive. The community’s collective effort, bolstered by donations collected at GMU’s Runway Cafe, showcased the true spirit of service.
New Facility Plans for a Brighter Future
In the aftermath of the fire, SSC has been diligently planning the construction of a new, modern facility at Greenville Downtown Airport. The updated design aims to not only restore but enhance SSC’s operational capabilities.
Highlights of the new facility include:
- A 23,873-square-foot hangar space equipped to accommodate diverse aircraft and advanced maintenance operations.
- Comprehensive office and assembly areas exceeding 6,800 square feet, providing enhanced workspaces for SSC’s team and clients.
- Improved storage and concourse areas for streamlined operations and greater efficiency.
- Upgraded safety measures, integrating lessons learned from the fire to ensure greater protection.
These new developments underscore SSC’s commitment to growth, resilience, and excellence in aviation services.
“SSC’s mission has always been to serve with dedication and integrity,” said Goldstrom. “Our new facility represents not just a recovery but a step forward—a platform for future growth and enhanced service capabilities.”
A Thank You to the Community
SSC wishes to express profound gratitude to its clients, partners, and the Greenville community for their unwavering support and patience over the past year. SSC remains committed to transparent communication as construction progresses and milestones are reached.
